Cruise Port Logistics Guide

Hamburg Cruise Port

Gateway for Hamburg, Germany

Start with HafenCity, Altona or Steinwerder, using the correct U4, ferry 62 or day-specific bus 256 chain and complete airport/return directions.

Hamburg transport at a glance

Hamburg’s cruise terminals are not interchangeable. HafenCity has U4 inside the district, Altona sits beside ferry 62, and Steinwerder needs a day-specific connector.

Key Decision

Identify the exact Hamburg terminal

  • HafenCity: passenger entrance Überseeboulevard 7, 20457 Hamburg, inside Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. Do not use the supplier-only Chicagostraße address.
  • Altona: Van-der-Smissen-Straße 5, 22767 Hamburg; Dockland ferry pier is beside the cruise centre.
  • Steinwerder: Buchheisterstraße 16, 20457 Hamburg; it is across working harbour land and is not a practical city-centre walk.

Save the terminal name and ship. Cruise Gate also lists Baakenhöft separately; if the sailing notice says Baakenhöft, do not substitute HafenCity without a current operator route.

Getting There

HafenCity: direct U4 connection

  1. Follow signs within the complex to U Überseequartier; entrances are at Überseeplatz, Grasbrookpark and the lower ground floor.
  2. Take U4 toward Billstedt.
  3. Alight at Jungfernstieg for the centre or Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (two stops from Überseequartier).

Allow 10–25 minutes total to Hbf including terminal walking, a normal wait and the short ride. A Hamburg AB single is €4.10. For return, board U4 toward Elbbrücken, alight at Überseequartier and follow cruise-terminal signs.

Your Situation

Altona: ferry 62 or bus 111

To Landungsbrücken/central Hamburg

  1. Exit toward the adjacent Dockland ferry pier.
  2. Board hvv ferry 62 toward Landungsbrücken.
  3. Alight at Landungsbrücken for U3/S-Bahn and the waterfront.

Allow 25–45 minutes total including a normal wait and ferry ride; this is a planning range. Fare: €4.10 Hamburg AB.

To Altona station

Walk to Große Elbstraße, board bus 111 toward Bf. Altona and alight at Bf. Altona. The official terminal page names this route; the walk to the stop is a few minutes.

For return from central Hamburg, take ferry 62 toward Finkenwerder and alight at Dockland. From Altona station, take 111 toward U/S Elbbrücken and alight at Kreuzfahrtterminal Altona/Große Elbstraße as shown live.

Your Situation

Steinwerder: conditional public transport

Do not assume a frequent ship shuttle. The official terminal page documents hvv public services:

  1. If a direct 256 Steinwerder Cruise Terminal departure appears for your date, board it toward U/S Elbbrücken; published ride time is about 22 minutes. Direct terminal service is limited by day/season.
  2. Daily fallback: walk about 450 m to Argentinienbrücke (Fähre), take 256 toward S Veddel/U/S Elbbrücken and alight at S Veddel.
  3. At Veddel take S3/S5 toward the city and alight at Hamburg Hbf.

Allow 40–65 minutes total to Hbf including terminal walking, a normal wait, bus and S-Bahn. Fare: €4.10 Hamburg AB. With heavy luggage or outside useful 256 times, a licensed taxi is the practical fallback; use the official calculator for a current estimate.

Your Situation

Hamburg Airport in both directions

Hamburg Airport publishes S1 every 10 minutes and 25 minutes between the airport and Hbf. The airport station is directly accessible from Terminals 1–2.

Airport-bound S1 rule: before Ohlsdorf, board or move into the front three carriages. The train divides at Ohlsdorf: the front three continue to Hamburg Airport, while the rear three continue to Poppenbüttel.

  • HafenCity → airport: U4 toward Billstedt to Hbf, then take the airport-bound S1 and remain in the front three carriages at the Ohlsdorf split. Allow 45–65 minutes total.
  • Altona → airport: ferry 62 toward Landungsbrücken, alight there, then take the airport-bound S1 and remain in the front three carriages at Ohlsdorf. Allow 55–80 minutes total.
  • Steinwerder → airport: 256 to Veddel, S3/S5 to Hbf, then take the airport-bound S1 and remain in the front three carriages at Ohlsdorf. Allow 75–110 minutes total; use taxi when the 256 connection is poor.

All ranges include terminal walking, normal waits, transfers and rides, but not airline check-in/security. A direct Hamburg AB journey is €4.10.

Airport → ship

Take S1 toward Wedel/Blankenese. The three-car airport train is coupled to the Poppenbüttel portion at Ohlsdorf; remain aboard for the city. For HafenCity, change at Jungfernstieg or Hbf to U4 toward Elbbrücken and alight Überseequartier. For Altona, alight Landungsbrücken and take ferry 62 toward Finkenwerder to Dockland. For Steinwerder, change at Hbf to S3/S5 toward Harburg/Stade, alight Veddel, then 256 toward Steinwerder Cruise Terminal when shown; otherwise alight Argentinienbrücke and walk 450 m.

Accessibility

Tickets, luggage and accessibility

  • The 2026 Hamburg AB single is €4.10. It allows changes on the direct route but not a round trip or return journey. Buy in an hvv app/online (7% app discount), at a machine, or on Hamburg buses with an hvv prepaid card; do not expect cash purchase on a city bus.
  • Ferry 62 and S/U-Bahn are included in the appropriate hvv ticket. Keep luggage clear of aisles and allow extra boarding time.
  • HafenCity has lifts inside the complex. Ferry gangway conditions and Steinwerder’s 450 m industrial-area approach can be difficult with luggage or limited mobility.
  • A step-free vehicle does not prove a step-free ship-to-platform route. Request cruise-line terminal assistance if needed.

Port Day

Return to ship and rechecks

  • HafenCity: U4 toward Elbbrücken to Überseequartier, then follow signs to Überseeboulevard 7.
  • Altona: ferry 62 toward Finkenwerder to Dockland, or bus 111 to the current terminal stop.
  • Steinwerder: S-Bahn to Veddel, then 256 toward Steinwerder Cruise Terminal if shown; otherwise use Argentinienbrücke plus the saved 450 m walk. Taxi if the limited connection cannot meet all-aboard.

Recheck the current terminal, 256 day/season schedule, ferry/S-Bahn alerts and all-aboard buffer. Walking and total ranges are planning estimates; the addresses, service sequence, 2026 fare and S1/terminal published times are sourced facts.
