Direct ship ↔ railway station
The cruise-only Civitavecchia Portlink/CSP bus runs on cruise arrival and departure days. At the station it leaves from the small square directly outside the exit; at the port follow staff signs for the station service at your ship terminal. It costs €6 per person each way, takes about 15 minutes and is published at roughly 20–25-minute intervals, subject to traffic and loading. Buy onboard, or add “Civitavecchia Porto” to a Trenitalia rail booking.
Free ship ↔ Largo della Pace
Port Mobility’s free cruise shuttle links cruise docks 10, 11, 12/12bis, 13/13bis and 25 with Largo della Pace, timed to ship calls. The published ride is about 10–15 minutes. This is not the railway-station bus. Largo della Pace is the port information hub; from there the station is a published 1.5 km/20-minute walk.

Rome independently: finish the whole chain
- At the ship, board the €6 direct station bus. If it is not useful for your call, take the free shuttle to Largo della Pace and walk 1.5 km to Civitavecchia station.
- Take an FL5 regional train toward Roma Termini. For St Peter’s/Vatican, alight at Roma San Pietro; for Trastevere, alight Roma Trastevere; for Testaccio/Metro B, use Roma Ostiense; use Roma Termini for central rail/Metro connections.
- On return, board an FL5 train showing Civitavecchia (or a farther valid destination whose stop list includes Civitavecchia). Do not board the Fiumicino Airport branch.
- At Civitavecchia station, use the direct €6 ship bus and confirm your ship on the loading sign.
Official material publishes roughly 45–60 minutes to Roma Trastevere; Termini services are commonly longer. Allow 1 hour 25 minutes–2 hours ship-to-Rome each way for the port bus, normal waits and rail. This planning range excludes Rome-local sightseeing transport. Build the return from all-aboard time and check the current platform and disruption notice.

Key Decision
Rome tickets and choosing the station
Buy before boarding through Trenitalia’s website/app, a station machine or ticket office. A paper regional ticket must be validated when its rules require it; a digital regional ticket follows the time/date shown in the app. Civitavecchia is a station where passengers are expected to board with a ticket.
If Civitavecchia Express appears for your date, the published tariff is €10 one way or €15 return to Roma San Pietro/Roma Ostiense and it is tied to the selected train and available seats. It is not the ordinary FL5 fare and does not run as a universal all-day service. For ordinary regional trains, use the live planner fare rather than an old saved price.
San Pietro is useful for the Vatican but still requires a city walk; Trastevere is the FCO interchange; Ostiense connects with Piramide/Metro B; Termini is not automatically best. A cheaper-looking train is not useful if its arrival station adds a long city transfer.

- Take the €6 ship–station bus to Civitavecchia station.
- Board an FL5 regional train toward Rome and alight at Roma Trastevere.
- Change to an FL1 train showing Fiumicino Aeroporto; alight at Fiumicino Aeroporto and follow terminal signs.
FCO → ship
- At the airport rail station, take FL1 toward Rome and alight at Roma Trastevere.
- Change to an FL5 train whose display/stop list includes Civitavecchia.
- Outside Civitavecchia station, board the €6 cruise-only bus to the ship and verify the ship name.
Trenitalia publishes an €11 second-class airport–Civitavecchia rail fare; add €6 for Portlink. Official port guidance describes the rail trip as a little over 1½ hours. Allow 2–2¾ hours ship-to-airport including the port bus, normal waits, transfer and luggage movement, before airline check-in/security. A direct road transfer avoids the rail change; Port Mobility publishes about 45–50 minutes in light conditions, but no official fixed passenger price was found—obtain a dated quote.

Your Situation
Starting a cruise: arrive at the ship, not just the port
From Rome: take FL5 from the Rome station that fits your hotel; verify Civitavecchia in the stop list. Outside Civitavecchia station use the €6 cruise-only bus to the ship. A booking to Civitavecchia Porto can combine rail and Portlink, but the bus remains a separate transport contract.
From FCO: use FL1 to Roma Trastevere, change to FL5 for Civitavecchia, then take the ship bus. With two suitcases or a tight arrival day, compare a direct pre-booked road transfer.
Do not stop at Largo della Pace if your ticket/driver can use the direct cruise terminal connection. Confirm the terminal and check-in time on the cruise line’s sailing documents; terminal assignments can change.

- Civitavecchia town → ship: return to Largo della Pace and take the free ship shuttle, or return to the station for the direct paid bus if operating for your call.
Portlink’s service window follows cruise operations and loading can delay a departure. Leave a sailing-specific buffer for the rail, bus queue, port security and gangway; a train’s arrival at Civitavecchia is not arrival at the ship.

Luggage and accessible travel
- The direct ship–station bus removes the 1.5 km Largo della Pace walk and is usually the lower-handling rail option with luggage.
- Port Mobility describes its port shuttle service as accessible. Civitavecchia station assistance is available on request; request rail assistance for the specific trains and allow the operator’s lead time.
- Roma Trastevere adds a platform change for FCO. Lifts can be unavailable and a suitcase must remain under your control.
- No source certifies a continuous step-free gangway–bus–platform–train chain for every berth. Ask the cruise line about gangway and terminal assistance.
